Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI), a bi-national organization was founded in 1968 and promotes academic relations and mutual understanding between India and Canada mainly through funding research and linking academic institutions in the two countries.

The Shastri Institute has the privilege of being the only bi-national institution with a membership of One Hundred Fourteen (114) premier academic Institutions in India (including IITs, IIMs, IISc, Law schools, Central and State Universities) and forty (40) universities in Canada (including McGill, Queens, Toronto, British Columbia and York Universities). The Institute’s scope has expanded over the period of time to include law, management, arts, information science, environment, science and technology including biotechnology along with humanities and social sciences.

The Shastri Institute has been instrumental in building understanding, respect and goodwill between India and Canada for the last fifty years through hundreds of fellowships, research partnerships and faculty and student exchanges. Many recipients report these were life changing experiences. The Institute has placed thousands of books in the libraries of Canadian universities to develop India studies and funded world class research.

SICI’s hallmark is the application of bi-national approach to higher education and research at the highest levels of quality and achievement. It is a matter of pride for us that on 23 February 2018 the respective Prime Ministers of the two countries jointly recognized “the 50th Anniversary of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute in promoting understanding between India and Canada through academic activities and exchanges, with the support of both governments to the Institute”.

The Institute has just completed its Golden Jubilee year. The Government of India has supported the organization over the last 50 years. The last Addendum of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Government of India and SICI was signed on 15th July, 2016. As per this Addendum, India office of SICI will administer the programme under which Indian students will be able to pursue Higher Education courses.
