The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 outlines a transformative vision for India’s education system, with a strong emphasis on empowering educators and fostering a culture of innovation. At the core of this vision is the need for motivated and capable faculty in higher education, recognizing that their professional development and capacity building are essential at every level of the education system.
In line with the recommendations of NEP 2020, the existing mechanisms, namely UGC-Human Resource Development Centres (HRDCs) and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching Centres (PMMMNMTT), have significantly contributed to faculty training. However, continuous professional development remains crucial due to the dynamic nature of teaching and learning. Hence, the Government has re-envisioned this scheme, to the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) and re-launched it by restructuring existing mechanisms to strengthen the capacity and training of teachers/faculty.
The Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) is a national initiative launched by the Ministry of Education to to strengthen the professional development of faculty in higher education institutions across India. It focuses on equipping educators with updated pedagogical skills, leadership qualities, and NEP 2020-aligned knowledge. Through a structured blend of training programmes, workshops, and online as well as face-to-face learning modules, the programme aims to enhance teaching quality, foster innovation, and elevate institutional performance. It further emphasizes developing faculty competencies in teaching, learning, and research by integrating Indian values, upgrading knowledge and skills, and ensuring academic practices remain relevant to societal needs in line with NEP 2020.
